Taco Fusion The Tampa Lion Meat Taco Maker Closes Down
10/9/2013 UPDATE: After posting this yesterday, the local media outlets jumped on the story and confirmed that Taco Fusion has shut down. For rent signs are posted.
For weeks, it was all the talk of Tampa. When Taco Fusion added lion meat to their menu, the uproar from lion lovers sparked negative online reviews on Yelp and calls for a boycott on Facebook and Twitter. Most recently, there was talk of some kind of TV show and plans were announced to sell reindeer meat tacos for Christmas. Well, it looks like Santa’s little four legged buddies are safe. Taco Fusion seems to have closed its doors.
After taking a drive by their 17th Street location in Ybor, Rudolph can breathe easily. No signs of activity can be seen. Although the Taco Fusion web site is up and running, their Facebook page and Twitter accounts have disappeared and nobody is answering the phone.
Ironically, it seems like there has been no media coverage about a closure. Maybe I’m just the first to notice? You would think after all the hype about the lion meat coverage, the news stations would be all over this.
Lion meat tacos came off the menu in mid August according to their web site.
I never did get a chance to try the place. I probably would’ve gone the conservative route and stuck with the basics… chicken is about as exotic as I get when it comes to eating meat. Those who actually did visit seemed to leave decent reviews — but the tidal wave of negative reviews from animal rights activists and protesters (many from out of town) left their Yelp rating at 2-1/2 stars.
Anyone have any details on if Taco Fusion has shut down for good?
Fortunately, there are great options for an authentic Mexican meal. I’m a huge fan of Miguel’s on Kennedy in Tampa. And now there’s a new Taco Bus location way too close to my house in Brandon. Any others I should try? Leave your tips in the comments area below!
