Yoko Ono is well known for her political activism, notably regarding sexism and racism, as well as promoting peace. But the news of drilling for natural gas in the Catskills is hitting close to home in the most literal sense for Ono, so she marched to New York’s capital of Albany to put a stop to it, the New York Times reports.
“Fracking kills, and it doesn’t just kill us,” Ono said. “It kills the land, nature and, eventually, the whole world.”
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a method of drilling for natural gas by injecting pressurized fluid into rock layers, causing fractures and the extraction of natural gas through a wellbore. John Lennon and Ono purchased a farm in the area, where they used their own well water and at one point, wanted to become dairy farmers. Ono wishes to prevent the drilling near the property and everywhere else.
“The reason I started all this,” said Sean Lennon, who accompanied his mother with 50 boxes containing 204,000 anti-drilling comments, “was because Cabot Oil was proposing a Constitution pipeline which really goes on the border of our house. And I wanted to save my own house and drink the water first, and then it sort of escalated from there.”
Though Governor Cuomo and members of the State Department were not in attendance, Ono promises her efforts will not end until the issue is resolved in her favor.
“If they do this, there will be a class action, and the class action is going to hit everybody who is doing this.”
