All weekend, Q105 features the one hit wonders of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Being the resident 80s kid on Q105, the big one I’ll always remember growing up was the song “Mickey” by Toni Basil. It was a staple in the early days of MTV and I remember rollerskating to it every Thursday afternoon at Happy Wheels in Portland, Maine where I grew up.
Toni’s real name is Antonia Christina Basilotta. She came from a musical family. Her wom was a Vaudeville acrobatic comedian. Dad conducted an orchestra in Las Vegas. That was where Toni became a cheerleader for the Las Vegas High School Wildcats.
That experience was clearly an asset for the classic music video:
So what is Tony Basil up to these days?
After the success of “Mickey,” Toni never had another chart topper, but she stayed in the industry. She just simply went back to her first love – choreography. You can see her work in Peggy Sue Got Married, That Thing You Do with Tom Hanks, and she even did some work for Soul Train and the Sid & Marty Kroft tribute TV Land did a couple years back.
