In a 10-day long auction, four never-before-seen 16mm color film reels of Jimi Hendrix were sold to an undisclosed buyer on eBay for $10,000.
The seller said he acquired the films from Chas Chandler, Hendrix’s manager for several years, who collected Jimi Hendrix memorabilia after his death in 1970.
The reels contain close-ups and clips from three different show during 1969 and 1970. The fourth reel contains unreleased footage from Monterey Pop in 1967. The seller said in the description the fourth reel was Chandler’s prize possession because it was Hendrix’s “first appearance in a major film.” The seller said Chandler kept the films in mint condition in his collection for 20 years.
He added a guarantee to the buyer that the film has not been copied, it’s a one-of-a-kind film, and will run with “no flaking” or “cracking,” which helped justify the $10,000 asking price.
