Andre 3000 will be tackling some of music’s most revered artists while playing the role of Jimi Hendrix in the biopic, All Is By My Side. The Outkast lyricist will be performing legendary songs by the Beatles, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and others.
But while longtime Hendrix fans will be hearing such iconic tracks as the Fab Four’s monumental “Sgt. Pepper’s Loney Hearts Club Band,” according to Rolling Stone, there will be no original songs from the late, great guitar hero.
Experience Hendrix, LLC, which oversees Hendrix’s estate, released a statement expressing disproval of the film and explained that song copyrights would not be granted for music use.
A spokesperson for Experience Hendrix further scoffed of the film:
“They want to make a Jimi Hendrix movie without Jimi Hendrix music. It would be like making a movie about Lincoln without being able to use the Gettysburg Address.”
The much talked about Andre 3000 vehicle will follow Hendrix’s rise in 1966 and 1967 ending with his career-making move to London, England where the genius axe man first became a star. And while a Jimi Hendrix movie with no Hendrix music may pose a production problem, a producer for the film says that the public will be shocked by 3000’s willingness to go the extra mile for the coveted role.
“Andre has been Jimi for four months now,” says Sean McKittrick, co-producer of All Is By My Side, which is currently being filmed in Dublin, Ireland. “He speaks and walks like Jimi. He dropped a ton of weight. The transformation has been amazing.”
All Is By My Side will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2013. A release featuring full soundtrack of Andre 3000 covers will follow. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
