One of rock and roll’s most riotous, resilient and written-about bands, Aerosmith returned to the stage this past weekend in Minneapolis to kick off their “Global Warming” tour. A sell-out throng of 14,000 Aerosmith lovers crowded into the Twin Cities Target Center on Saturday night to see if the band that broke out with “Dream On” nearly 40 years ago still brings the noise.
By all accounts, they do. Opening with the 1977 single, “Draw The Line,” the band blasted through nearly two dozen cuts that included the world premiere of their new song, “Oh Yeah,” their cover of Rufus Thomas’ “Walkin’ The Dog” (dating back to their 1973 debut) along with rock radio classics “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way” and “Rag Doll.”
For their encore, “Dream On” got a reading along with their 1974 Tiny Bradshaw cover, “Train Kept A’Rollin’.” So were guitarist Joe Perry’s tweets that “the band is smokin’ hot” and “playing better than ever” still true? So far, it sounds like the answer is “yes.” Fans worried about the state of Perry and Steven Tyler’s relationship should note another of Perry’s tweets: “Great show last night @IamStevenT looking forward to the next one. Nice to be indoors for a change. You killed ‘em.” It seems that the recently volatile relationship between “The Toxic Twins” has warmed considerably in recent months.
Next up on the itinerary: tomorrow night’s gig in Cleveland followed by shows in Chicago, Toronto and Albany, NY. Find their official tour schedule here.
