TX: Lubbock: Buddy Holly

February 3, 1959. It’s called The Day The Music Died because of the crash of a small plane in an Iowa cornfield. The passengers were part of a Rock ‘n Roll tour going through the Midwest. Half of the tour members would take the tour-bus and the other half the plane. Buddy Holly & Waylon Jennings flipped a coin for the last seat in the heated plane. (The bus did not have a working heater). Buddy won the toss. Shortly after take-off, it wasn’t much of a win.

The plane crashed, killing Buddy Holly, J.P.Richardson (The Big Bopper) & Richie Valens. The song “American Pie” by Don McLean begins with the story of “The Day The Music Died” and brings you up to date on rock ‘n roll events that happened from then to the record’s release. A good friend of mine, Bob Dearborn wrote an analysis of the song that can be read at http://bobdearbornamericanpie.andmuchmore.com/.

This is a good place to start for their music!
