Can – Landed (Horzu/Virgin, 1975)

As adventurous with their album covers as they were with their avant-underground, spontaneously combustible music, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Can[/lastfm] covered their Landed album with a mix of Warholian multiplicity and amateurish doodling.

Offering design credit to someone known simply as “Christine,” the cover of Can’s seventh album, Landed, takes cues from Andy Warhol’s soup can serialism by spreading numerous photos of the band’s members over a grid of thirty-six spaces.

On top of those pictures, are graffiti-like doodles reminiscent of what happens when an idle teenager is left alone with a magazine and magic marker.

Always interested in the group dynamic over the individual, the cover is a perfect portrayal of the band’s ethos. It also hints, in its slightly glam-ish Warholian style, at what is inside, considered by some to be more pop-oriented and accessible than what was usually released by the band (though still a million miles from the Top 40).

Every picture tells a story … so why not read about more Awesome Album Covers.
