A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Tampa man accused of killing his girlfriend, Danitza Fonseca, with a machete. Alexander Cote Ferre told his lawyer he was hearing voices, which prompted the judge to order three psychiatrists to examine the 40-year-old, to determine if he was fit to be on trial. Two of them said he was not fit. The judge immediately declared Ferre incompetent. He will now undergo intensive treatment at a mental institution to get him ready for trial again. A new trial means Fonseca’s two teenage daughters will most likely have to testify again about the day they watched Ferre kill their mother, and threaten their lives.

A referee’s call in a youth football game, between the Sarasota Gators and the North Port Huskies, allegedly led to him being attacked. The fight happened right before halftime at Riverview High School in Sarasota on Saturday afternoon. According to TBO.com, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fight, which was captured on video. The referee is seen fighting with another coach, players, and people in the crowd. The lawyer for an accused cop killer is looking to get his confession thrown out of court. 16-year-old Nicholas Lindsey admitted that he shot and killed St. Petersburg police officer David Crawford; but Attorney Dyril Flanagan is trying to get those statements suppressed. The case is tentatively set to go to trial in December.

The teen accused of plotting to bomb Tampa’s Freedom High School will be tried as an adult. The state attorney’s office says 17-year-old Jared Cano will be tried in adult court on charges of possessing bomb-making materials and three marijuana charges. Police say they were able to stop Cano, before he could plant pipe bombs at Freedom High, that he wanted to detonate on the first day of class. Investigators found a manifesto, in which Cano wrote that he planned to kill 32 people as retribution for his expulsion from the school.

Selmon tells the “St. Petersburg Times” that despite numerous reports, he and his brother Dewey are not part of the lawsuit. Last week, a group of former players filed suit against the NFL and two top equipment makers, saying they didn’t do enough to protect them from head injuries.

It took more than a year of negotiating but there’s finally a deal between the Polk County teacher’s union and the school district over health insurance. The 13-thousand employees covered by the plan will have to make co-pays for doctor visits, but their deductible will be cut in half, down to 750-dollars a year. The union successfully fought against a proposal to have teachers pay part of the premium.
