Fans of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Who[/lastfm] will finally get the intimate details of just WHO [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Pete Townshend[/lastfm] is. After fifteen painstaking years, involving on-again-off-again rumors from the guitarist, Townshend finally plans to release his memoir sometime during the fall of 2012.
“In the 1970s, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Pete Townshend[/lastfm] famously asked the musical question ‘Who are you?’ Now, in his autobiography, generations of fans will finally get the answer they’ve been waiting for,” Harper Collins executive editor David Hirshey said in a statement regarding Townshend’s memoir, entitled Who He?
Townshend began working on his autobiography in the mid-’90s, then in 2003 he was suddenly cautioned by the British police for accessing child pornography on the internet. Townshend explained that as a child he was sexually abused at a young age and was doing research for his book.
“I have been writing my childhood autobiography for the past seven years. I believe I was sexually abused between the age of five and six and a half when in the care of my maternal grandmother who was mentally ill at the time. I cannot remember clearly what happened, but my creative work tends to throw up nasty shadows – particularly in Tommy. Some of the things I have seen on the net have informed my book which I hope will be published later this year,” Townshend said in a written statement at the time of the caution.
Four years would pass before further word on the progress of his book would be released through his personal website, releasing statements that the “the backbone was in place… all research is complete.” Townshend’s site was shut down without warning soon after, and it would not be until 2008 when he released a statement that the book was on ice.
Hopefully there will be no more setbacks now that a timetable is set and a publisher is involved. Expect to see Who He? on bookshelves/kindles/neurochip in the fall of 2012.
