After yesterday’s marathon court session, there are actually fewer potential jurors who could be seated in the murder trial of Casey Anthony, than when the day began. Preemptive challenges cut the pool from 17 down to 11, and just when lawyers agreed on a 12th juror, another challenge by the defense brought the number back down to eleven. Twelve people will decide if Anthony murdered her two-year-old daughter, Caylee in 2008. The judge wants up to eight alternates, because the trial is expected to drag on for two months. The selection process resumes this morning in Clearwater. Judge Perry said he hopes to swear in a jury today, and has promised to give jurors a full 24 hours off, before the trial begins in Orange County.

Governor Rick Scott just signed a bill that supporters say will help stabilize the property insurance market in Florida. But opponents say homeowners should brace for big increases in their premiums. Under the new law, insurance companies will be able to raise their rates up to 15-percent to cover their increased costs to purchase reinsurance. The law also limits claims for damage caused by sinkholes. Legislative sponsors say the new law should lure more insurers to Florida, and in the end, help reduce costs. Opponents say the law will just hurt homeowners already struggling to pay their bills, while watching their home values fall.
