Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon blast that triggered the spill in the Gulf. lt’s also a legal deadline for the state to join a lawsuit against the owner of the oil rig. Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi announced during yesterday’s Cabinet meeting that the state is not joining the suit and instead will try to mediate its dispute with BP and keep the case out of court. Several cities and counties have signed onto the federal lawsuit against Transocean, which owned the rig hired by BP to drill in the Gulf. Scott says the state will seek compensation to cover out-of-pocket costs as well as lost revenues.

Commercial and recreational fishermen can again cast their hooks in the Gulf of Mexico, unrestricted. One year after the BP oil spill, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration is reopening about one-thousand square miles around the Deepwater Horizon wellhead. NOAA and the FDA announced that there’s no health concern, after they conducted chemical tests over several months to check for oil and oil dispersant in fish and shellfish.

Winter Haven Police are investigating a homicide at the Sailwind Apartments on 24th Street NW, after a body was found last night. Police have not yet named any suspects.

The attorney representing the 13-year-old Boy Scout who allegedly stabbed a school resource officer at Carwise Middle School in Palm Harbor says that his client planned to commit suicide after the attack. Kenny Stoltman was caught with nearly a dozen small bottles of gasoline that he says he wanted to use to hurt students who bullied him. His attorney is working to keep the teen from going to jail. Stoltman faces charges of attempted murder, battery on a school official, and possessing firebombs.

Two people are in the hospital being treated for injuries they received when the meth lab they were running in Pasco County exploded. The sheriff’s office says two women and one man were in the home on 14th Street in Dade City when the blast happened, yesterday afternoon. One man and one woman were flown to area hospitals to be treated for burns, while another woman fled the scene before deputies could arrive. The flash fire caused only minor damage to the home, which was being rented.

More than 130 workers will soon be on the job market with the closure of another business in St. Petersburg. Murphy Cap & Gown notified state labor officials that it intends to shut down its plant on 31st Street North, cutting jobs to all 133 workers. Murphy makes gowns for clergy members and graduates.

The father of a Satellite Beach boy who accidentally shot his 11-year-old friend is facing criminal prosecution. Police say 42-year-old Michael Capozzii stored two rifles, a handgun and ammo in his nine-year-old son’s bedroom. Capozzi’s son apparently shot the 11-year-old who was at the home for a sleepover. Doctors expect the boy to make a full recovery. Capozzi faces charges of culpable negligence and violating laws on the safe storage of firearms.

The FAA says First Lady Michelle Obama’s plane was not in jeopardy when it’s landing was temporarily delayed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Her plane apparently lacked the required five-mile separation from a 200-ton military cargo jet that was taking off. The FAA now wants to know why her plane was cleared for landing.

The federal corruption retrial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich kicks off today with efforts to seat a jury. A legal analyst says the biggest question is whether an unbiased jury can be found to deal with the outspoken ex-governor. He’s accused of trying to sell President Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat for political favors and cash.

The NFL is still working to resolve a standoff with its players’ union. League and union representatives met for the third time in court-ordered mediation at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis on Tuesday. The NFL locked out its players on March 12th. Players are expecting a judge’s decision on an injunction to lift the lockout this week.
